Did You Know Why Gabions Are Used in Construction?

Before we even proceed towards answering the question we have just asked, it is essential to let you know what gabion is. As most of you might not be familiar with the word, although you must have seen it, we are sure about that because the use of gabions is widespread in different construction projects. That being said, so what is a gabion? Have you ever stayed around any mountainous or hilly area? Weren't the houses in that area surrounded by wire boxes filled with rocks and stones? You have seen them, right? Those are gabions, flexible welded wire boxes filled with rocks and stones, or sometimes sand and soil. The primary purpose of their usage is to help prevent erosion in construction; other than that, they are used for various other purposes, so their use isn't limited. Interestingly, gabions don't come in box type only; box type gabion is used more commonly. People are usually familiar with it, but some other gabions appear entirely different from the box type. Let's have a look at all the different kinds of gabions.

Types Of Gabions and Their Specific Uses:

The distinctively different design of each gabion is made to serve a specific function for specific projects; thereby, each type of gabion is unique and equally essential to the kind of project it is designed for. Without any further ado, let's head straight towards discussing all the different types of gabions:

  • Gabions Box:

Gabion box is made of galvanized welded wire mesh-like rectangular box. It can be made in all the different sizes depending on the requirement of your project. The price of a gabion box is comparatively very cost-effective than other types of gabions. If you happen to find a good wholesale galvanized welded gabion box exporter, then it would become even cheaper. One can quickly fill them with stones and rocks present around the site of the project. It is most commonly used around highway and railway-related works. Other than that, people even use it for decorating their gardens.

  • Gabion Mattress:

Not a mattress you would like to sleep but a mattress that helps in the restoration of the natural environment that we happen to disregard. Gabion mattresses look precisely like the sleeping mattress in their shape and design but are filled with rocks and stones or, in some cases, soil and sand. These are mainly used around dams and river banks to help them retain themselves without erosion. The less common uses of gabion mattresses are slope stabilization, wall retention, channel lining, and creating a sound barrier. Unlike gabion boxes, gabion mattresses have a common size of 2m wide, 6m long, and 0.3 m high.

  • Gabion Sack:

Gabion sack is a welded wire mesh turned into a sack-like jute sack, flexible. It is not just used for preventing erosion in different construction places, but it is more commonly used to create secure protective boundaries around areas when armed forces reside, like around their bases as the rocks and stones that are filled into these sacks do not allow a bullet to pass through the sack thereby complete bulletproof protection.

  • Gabion Mesh:

Gabion mesh is an entirely different type of gabion as it has no particular shape or structure; it looks exactly like any other wire mesh. It is designed to be installed all over mountains that are present alongside roads. Thus, they help keep safe the vehicles that run on these roads from landscaping and rocks or stones that might fall from the mountains. It is the only gabion that isn't filled with anything and is used as it is entirely.

Final Word:

Gabions might appear to you as something very ordinary or simple, but there are several reasons that are involved behind their hype as a product. The most exceptional feature of gabions is their durability; despite being so simple in their structure, gabions' durability in intense projects is tremendous. Their flexibility helps them withstand every kind of impact and thus increases their durability. The cost that one has to pay for the benefits that gabions provide is minimal, making it the only cost-effective option among other same types of products. Besides protection, durability, and more of the same things, gabions are also aesthetic, which is very unlikely and thus an attractive point of gabions. All in all, gabions are a simple but handy item for restoring the environment; by all means, even if it comes to protecting vegetation or cutting down noise pollution, gabions can do it all.
